Rejoice, fellow flashaholics! If you, like me, have been waiting for custom ROMs to pop up on our forums before hopping on the Nougat hype train, then your long wait will soon come to an end. With the official release of Android 7.0 Nougat the other day, Google has begun uploading the source code for the latest Android version.
The talented developers on our forums are finally able to build Android 7.0-based ROMs from source, so you won’t have to run stock Android without all of the bells and whistles you’ve long grown accustomed to (at least, if/when Xposed for Nougat makes its official debut).
As is customary with each new release of Android, developers are already hard at work bringing all of their supported devices up to date with Google’s latest source drop. CyanogenMod, for instance, has already begun merging Nougat’s source code under the CyanogenMod 14.0 umbrella for the Nexus 5X. Other Android 7.0 officially supported devices will likely soon follow suit, but given the fact that CyanogenMod device maintainers are all volunteer developers there isn’t any exact release date you should expect (and out of respect for the developers, should not ask for). Still, we here at XDA-Developers are excited for the floodgates that Google has opened up with the release of Nougat’s source code. I’ve personally been running Chroma ROM on my Nexus 6P for several months now, so I’m excited for its upcoming 7.0-based release.
Head on over to our forums to keep an eye out for the first batch of custom ROMs based on Android 7.0. Sorry Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013) owners, you’ll have to wait a bit longer before you can taste customized Nougat due to the lack of official support for the device. As for users on non-Nexus phones or tablets, you’re at the mercy of your OEM or network carrier. Don’t get your hopes up, though, as your OEM or carrier might fail to deliver as some fans of the Sony Xperia Z3 are learning.
Developers will bring their ROMs up to date as they see fit, so please understand that this is no easy task and never forget to say thanks. While there will undoubtedly be a lot of enthusiasm and cravings floating around the community, ROM makers at XDA spend their valuable time making such ROMs for the community — so please, be mindful and respectful at all times. Let’s all savor Nougat together!
