Qualcomm Announces VR SDK for Snapdragon 820

This year there is no doubt that virtual reality is a highlight of the Game Developers Conference — so much that there is a separate VR track this year. Companies all over the spectrum such as AMD, NVIDIA, Oculus, Samsung and HTC are all planning announcements this week.

Qualcomm, not to be left out of the party, has also put their hat into the VR ring. Earlier today they announced a VR software development kit (SDK) designed for the Snapdragon 820 – the same SoC powering multiple flagships, including the US Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5. The SDK is expected to be available no later than June through the Qualcomm Developer Network and is designed to help optimize the VR experience on the 820.

The announcement was anticipated given that Qualcomm highlighted both the 4K and VR capable features of the Snapdragon 820 last year. Developers can expect to see tools to help from sound, graphics and even effective power management to both maximize performance and minimize power consumption while providing an great VR experience for users.

Qualcomm’s Senior Direct of Engineering Dave Durnil added this in the press release:

We’re providing advanced tools and technologies to help developers significantly improve the virtual reality experience for applications like games, 360 degree VR videos and a variety of interactive education and entertainment applications. VR represents a new paradigm for how we interact with the world, and we’re excited to help mobile VR developers more efficiently deliver compelling and high-quality experiences on upcoming Snapdragon 820 VR-capable Android smartphones and headsets.
